I hear there is an open house about the proposed Yonge North Subway extension today, Wednesday November 12. It’s a small meeting for stakeholders, but open to the public. I wish I could give you a URL to confirm the details below — perhaps ttc.ca or vivayork.com will have something today. (See links below.)
These subway meetings are setting new standards in public consultation — but I know from personal experience that failing to put timely info on the web can affect turnout. For a public agency, it can’t be an afterthought.
Here’s all I have so far:
Date: Wednesday November 12, 2008
Location: North York Civic Centre, 5100 Yonge Street, Commitee Room #3
Time: 5 – 7 pm
Via ttc.ca: Public meetings
Via vivayork.com follow >> what’s new >> public consultation
This site is Flash-heavy and my browser seems to get indigestion after viewing it. I hear changes are planned, but in the meantime there is a great deal of info about the proposed Yonge extension and the public comments and questions so far.
Transit officials are welcome to leave more details of this meeting in the comments.
It was more of a open-house type of meeting to showcase the final designs on the stations for the extension.
Consultants were on hand to discuss the designs on the stations, and to ask questions.
It was well attended, and the stakeholders(such as myself) who attended the previous meetings in York Region received letters, and e-mails about the meeting 2 weeks ago.
They aren’t final designs, but it’s getting closer to the “final general overview”. There’s still some changes that might come. The next meeting, November 26th (mark your calendars), will allow the discussion to move on the Richmond Hill Centre station… including Langstaff GO!
I stand corrected.
I will look forward to that meeting. Richmond Hill Station is definitely going to interesting considering the potential to build a major transit hub there!
Are the Yonge bus-only lanes officially dead, both north and south of Steeles? Has this come up at the meetings?
Do all those bus passengers heading to Finch station have to wait until the subway opens to get fast, traffic-free service?
Depending on when the subway extension gets built, does it not make sense to get those buses out of traffic — especially if some lanes will have to be closed during construction ?
York is at it again — consulting the people:

The issue of the bus-lanes came up at a previous public meeting, and from what I have been told, the bus-lanes from Finch to Steeles is officially off the table. A bad idea, in my opinion. The Highway 7 Busway, and the Yonge Busway from RHC to 19th Avenue are still on the table. Yonge St already has HOV lanes, that are poorly enforced. It would be a simple task to convert those lanes to Bus Lanes, or even make them a part of the Highway HOV network.
I received a letter from York Region Rapid Transit Corporation for the next round of public meetings:
