Photojunkie: Let’s go to the Ex!

Posted on August 22, 2008 at 11:11 am by Rannie Turingan

You know Labour Day is just around the corner when the Canadian National Exhibition opens it’s gates for business during the last two weeks in August. With gas prices rising and parking being a premium in the area, transit tends to be one of the better ways of getting down there. Routes are posted after the jump.

Getting to the Exhibition by Transit

via GO Transit

- Take the Lakeshore GO Train to the Exhibition station. GO Trains on the Lakeshore line take you right to the CNE gates.

via TTC

- From Union Subway Station: take the 509 Harbourfront Streetcar West
- From Bathurst Subway Station: take the 511 Bathurst Streetcar South
- From Dufferin Subway Station: take the 29 Dufferin Bus South
- From Dundas West Subway Station: take the 193 Exhibition Rocket

  1. I miss the Dundas Exhibition streetcar that ran from Dundas West Station (or Runnymede before the Bloor-Danforth Subway opened) to the the Western Entrance of the C.N.E.. It was replaced by the 193 Exhibition Rocket because there were “not enough streetcars”.

  2. One highly unfortunate thing about access to The Ex is that they have closed the Martin Goodman Trail and turned Marilyn Bell Park into Marilyn Bell Parking Lot.

You would think that maybe they would try to get more people to take transit, walk, and cycle to The Ex instead. Instead, they have made walking and cycling more difficult, and are filling up a park with parked cars, encouraging more people to drive.

  3. The Ex is pretty decent to get to transit-wise, but Ontario Place is severely lacking as they expect everyone to walk from the north end of The Ex. I think the 63 Ossington used to run to the front door of Ontario Place, but for some reason was stopped years ago.

  4. Even with GO Transit Ex discounts, GO Lakeshore lots are not full during the weekends. Yet the traffic congestion & actual ‘park’ parking mentioned above is a disgrace to teh environment.

Sounds like the solution could be to reduce parking capacity at the Ex. As Portland Oregon found out, reducing parking capacity downtown did wonders for making it more breathable, and to encourage transit ridership. Their LRT system is on it’s 4th extension in 20 years.
